Your first nail appointment: what to expect, step by step
22 August 2026 · 5 min read
If you have never had your nails done professionally, the unknowns can feel bigger than they are: what will they do, how long does it take, will it hurt, what if I choose wrong? Here is the whole visit, demystified. (Salon owners — this one is written for your clients. Share it with your next nervous first-timer.)
Before you book: choosing a service
A classic manicure tidies and polishes your natural nails. Gel polish is similar but cured under a lamp, so it lasts weeks instead of days. Enhancements — builder gel or acrylic — add strength or length on top of your own nail. If you are not sure, book the simplest option, or message the salon and describe what you want in plain words; nobody minds, and it happens every day.
What actually happens, step by step
- A short chat about shape, length and colour — inspiration photos are welcome, not embarrassing
- Prep: your nails are filed to shape and the cuticles are gently tidied
- Colour or product goes on in thin layers; with gel, each layer cures under a small lamp in under a minute
- Finishing touches: the surface is sealed, the edges checked, and oil goes on the skin around the nail
How long does it take?
It depends on the service: a simple manicure is usually done within the hour, gel takes a little longer, and a full set of extensions is a proper sit-down. A good booking page shows the duration next to each service before you book, so nothing about your afternoon is a surprise.
How to prepare
- Come as you are — you don't need to cut, shape or paint anything beforehand
- Wearing old gel or acrylic? Say so when you book, so removal time is planned in
- Mention allergies or sensitive skin at the start; it changes product choices, not the welcome
- Plan for your hands being busy: pay, message and scroll before the colour goes on
Questions that are completely fine to ask
- How long will this last, and what does it look like as it grows out?
- What is the difference between the two services I am choosing between?
- How is this removed later — and can I have that done here too?
- What does the price include, and what counts as an extra?
Half of this should be answered before you ask
A good salon answers most of these questions before you ever reach the chair: the booking page lists every service in plain words with its duration and price, the confirmation email repeats the when and the where, and rescheduling is a link rather than an awkward phone call. If the salon you are eyeing has all of that, you have probably found a good one. What a clear booking page shows · Slotora for nail salons
