What is worth knowing here
Perfume is the one line in a beauty business that is bought almost entirely to be passed on. A salon keeps a short shelf of it beside the till for clients who ask what she is wearing, uses a bottle as a thank-you for a regular, or makes up a gift for a birthday or the end of the year. The question is rarely which scent is best in the abstract. It is which few bottles will move, at what price, and how quickly the next one can arrive.
The shelves here follow how perfume is actually chosen. Women's, men's and unisex are the first split. Arabian and oriental houses — Lattafa, Maison Alhambra, Armaf, Rasasi and their neighbours — have a shelf of their own, because they are bought as a category: rich, long-lasting, often oud, amber or vanilla, at a price that leaves room to sell on. Samples and decants are the small sizes, two to ten millilitres, which is how a client tries a scent before committing to a full bottle.
Two things are worth reading on the supplier's page before ordering. The first is the concentration: an extrait or eau de parfum carries more perfume oil and lasts longer than an eau de toilette, and the price difference usually reflects that. The second is what the bottle is. A title that names a famous brand may describe an inspired-by scent rather than the original, and the supplier's own page states which. The price, the stock and the delivery are the supplier's too.
Questions we are asked
- What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
- The concentration of perfume oil. An eau de parfum carries more of it than an eau de toilette and usually lasts longer on the skin; an extrait carries more again. The supplier's page states which one a bottle is.
- Is a perfume named after a famous brand the original?
- Not necessarily. Some houses make scents inspired by a well-known perfume and use its name to describe the style. The supplier's own page says whether a bottle is the original or an inspired version.
- Can I order from two suppliers at once?
- Not in one go. Each order is placed on that supplier's own shop, so two suppliers are two orders and two deliveries.
